Installation Error Codes

Reference guide for installer exit codes and setup troubleshooting on Windows.

Installer Diagnostic Note

Before returning an exit code of 1, 3, 4, 7, or 8, a descriptive system dialog explaining the underlying problem will normally be displayed by the setup wizard.

Setup Completed / Help Parameter

Exit Code 0

Setup was successfully run to completion or the /HELP or /? command-line parameter was used.

Initialization Failure

Exit Code 1

Setup failed to initialize. Check administrator permissions and ensure the temporary extraction directory is writable.

Cancelled by User (Pre-Install)

Exit Code 2

The user clicked Cancel in the wizard before the actual installation started, or chose "No" on the initial "This will install..." prompt.

Fatal Preparation Error

Exit Code 3

A fatal error occurred while preparing to move to the next installation phase (for example, from displaying the pre-installation wizard pages to the actual file extraction process). This generally indicates extreme circumstances such as running out of system memory or exhausted GDI/Windows handles.

Fatal Installation Error

Exit Code 4

A fatal error occurred during the actual installation process. Note: Errors that trigger an Abort-Retry-Ignore dialog are not fatal errors; if the user chooses Abort at such a prompt, exit code 5 will be returned instead.

Cancelled During Extraction / Aborted

Exit Code 5

The user clicked Cancel during the active file installation, or explicitly selected Abort at an Abort-Retry-Ignore message box.

Process Forcefully Terminated

Exit Code 6

The setup process was forcefully killed by a debugger or task manager (such as when Run | Terminate was triggered in the development compiler IDE).

Cannot Proceed (Pre-flight Check)

Exit Code 7

The "Preparing to Install" stage determined that Setup cannot proceed with installation due to missing system requirements, incompatible OS builds, or file locks.

Reboot Required

Exit Code 8

The "Preparing to Install" stage determined that Setup cannot proceed because pending file operations require an operating system restart before installation can continue.

Still experiencing problems during setup?

If the installer continues to exit unexpectedly, let us know the exact error message and your Windows version.
